Pengy (character)

Pengy is a species of penguins in the Kirby franchise. It made its first appearance in Kirby's Adventure, and has appeared in a few Kirby games. Pengy has not appeared in any 2.5D or 3D Kirby games. Kirby can receive the Ice ability from a Pengy by inhaling and then swallowing it.

History

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

In Kirby's Adventure and its Game Boy Advance remake Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Pengy is featured as an enemy. It slides around short distances on its belly as it waits for Kirby to draw near. When he does, Pengy rears back briefly before releasing a stream of icy breath that can freeze Kirby. A Pengy's breath has longer range than Kirby's inhale, so Kirby is likely for

Kirby's Dream Land 2

In Kirby's Dream Land 2, it is named Master Pengy. Aside from a sprite redesign, Master Pengis are the same as in Kirby's Adventure.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror

In Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Pengy returns as an enemy, and its sprites are reused from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. It also has little difference in its behavior. Using the Mix Copy Ability with a Pengy grants Kirby the Hammer ability.

Kirby: Squeak Squad

Kirby encountering a Pengy in Kirby: Squeak Squad

In Kirby: Squeak Squad, Pengy appears as an enemy, and reuses its sprites from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Pengy no longer rears back before attacking, so it is more difficult to anticipate when it attacks.

Kirby Mass Attack

In Kirby Mass Attack, Pengy makes a cameo appearance in Kirby Brawlball as part of Marx's black hole attack.

Unused appearances

Kirby Block Ball

Like Waddle Doo, Pengy is an enemy that went unused in Kirby's Block Ball. Despite this, both of them have artwork present in the game manual, suggesting that they were scrapped late into the game's development. This is further supported by the idea that both enemies are fully coded into the game, albeit unused. Pengy's graphics are loaded in Stage 7-2, suggesting it would have been appeared there. Pengy's sprites closely resemble its appearance in Kirby's Dream Land 2. A Pengy's sprite for being defeated shows it frozen within an ice block.

Kirby: Right Back at Ya!

“It is the Pengys' fate to wander far and wide. We are very weary but happy to have stumbled upon your chilly village. We would like to rest here for a while if you will have us. ”

A Pengy in "The Chill Factor"

In Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, Pengis only appear in the 66th episode, "The Chill Factor." Here, Pengis are featured as a species, and are led by a bushy-eyed master who is also named Pengy. The Pengis show up one summer day in Cappy Town, bringing with them cold weather and driving everyone insane. Their plan is unveiled when Tiff, Tuff, and Kirby discover a giant storm-generating machine hidden inside the Pengys' glacier. Apparently, the Pengys were displaced and driven out of their natural habitat because of global warming, leading them to emphatically want revenge on the Cappies. They are intent on overtaking Cappy Town and creating a perpetual, year-round winter. With his cover blown, the lead Pengy goes on a rampage, freezes everyone in the town, and incarcerates them.

The Pengy leader introduces his tribe atop their glacier

When Kirby and the gang escape and confront the lead Pengy in Castle Dedede, he challenges Kirby to a fight and begins using his frost breath to attack. Kirby inhales some of his attacks and becomes Ice Kirby. The two are evenly matched, and it takes the combined efforts of King Dedede, Escargoon (who order a mysterious potion from Nightmare Enterprises), and Tiff (who summons the Warp Star from Kabu) to help Kirby drive the Pengys off. Kirby flies to Booma-Dooma Volcano and pours the concoction into it, causing it to erupt and warm up Dream Land. At this point, the Pengys decide to look for another new place to live, while possibly admitting that taking revenge on someone was no way to conserve energy.

The main Pengy is voiced by Nobuo Tobita in Japan and Mike Pollock in English.

General information

Physical appearance

Pengy's original appearance, shown in its Kirby's Adventure artwork

Pengy is a small, blue penguin-like creature. It has a large yellow beak with a throat pouch that extends over most of its front. Pengy's stomach is white, while its back is blue. A pair of flippers hang at the enemy's sides, and it has yellow feet resembling Kirby's.

For its Kirby's Adventure artwork, Pengy's belly and feet are both colored light blue. This artwork is shown in both the English and Japanese instruction booklets for Kirby's Block Ball, despite Pengy not appearing in the game.

As of Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Pengy now features white, spiky eyebrows. This design has remained consistent with all subsequent games Pengy has appeared in. In a pre-release screenshot, Pengy was shown to have originally bore a greater resemblance to its Kirby's Adventure artwork.

In Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, the leader Pengy retains the design from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, although the other Pengys lack the eyebrows.
