Kirby Super Star Ultra is a remake of Kirby Super Star for the Nintendo DS. It was released in 2008 in North America, Japan, Australia, and South Korea and lastly in Europe in 2009. Unlike the original Kirby Super Star, which is named Kirby's Fun Pak in Europe and Australia, the title Kirby Super Star Ultra applies to all English-speaking regions. As with most remakes, Kirby Super Star Ultra features more content than what was in the original game.

Changes

Games

Four more games were added into Kirby Super Star Ultra:

The last two new modes are based on The Arena; the first puts players in control of Kirby's helper characters, while the latter is a more difficult version of The Arena:

  • Helper to Hero: all of the characters are the helpers of each of Kirby's abilities, and they will have to battle various bosses.
  • The True Arena: the player character must fight all of the bosses and mid-bosses from Revenge of the King and the final bosses from Helper to Hero and Meta Knightmare Ultra. A stronger variation of Marx, titled Marx Soul, is featured as the true final boss.

Sub-Games

Kirby Super Star Ultra features three unique Sub-Games. All of these games feature four Kirbys competing, with the player controlling the default pink Kirby and the other three being CPUs (or other players, as the new Sub-Games support multiplayer):

  • Snack Tracks: Kirby is laying in front of a conveyor belt which is carrying food towards them, attempting to eat the most of the four. The player must use the stylus to tap objects that are not food to keep them out of Kirby's path.
  • Kirby Card Swipe: the player must view a certain number of cards with images on them, wait for an image to show on the top screen, and then be the first to touch the same card that is shown on the image.
  • Kirby on the Draw: Kirby must shoot at images in a shooting gallery for points. He must avoid shooting at any Bomber otherwise he loses points.

Additionally, the two original Sub-Games from Kirby Super Star, Megaton Punch and Samurai Kirby, are featured as unlockables. The graphics are identical as in the original version, albeit modified to fit on the Nintendo DS's screen.

Other

Kirby Super Star Ultra uses 3D FMV cutscenes that are played using the Actimagine video codec.

The game has unlockable cutscenes and music that can be viewed from the Theater and Jukebox respectively.

A two-player mode was added to Spring Breeze, using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to connect to another Kirby Super Star Ultra game card. The second player controls a Helper, but the first player controls Kirby as usual.

Just like with Kirby Super Star, there are 26 copy abilities that are still retained in this game.
