Gordos are a recurring enemy in the Kirby franchise, and they first appear in Kirby's Dream Land. Gordos are invincible spiked balls, and Kirby cannot damage them or even inhale them. Because of this, Gordos do not yield any Copy Ability. Gordos generally fulfill a consistent role throughout their appearances.
Gordos appear to have served as the basis for a few enemies from other Nintendo games including Unibōs from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and Sea Urchins from The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
Gordos are metallic balls with a pair of eyes and eight spikes protruding in each direction, with the ones on the side moving in and out repeatedly. A Gordo's body color has varied from dark blue, black, and dark purple. Gordos also have either silver or yellow spikes, although early Kirby's Dream Land and Kirby's Pinball Land artwork shows them with orange spikes.
History
Main series
Kirby's Dream Land
In Kirby's Dream Land, Gordos appear in most stages, both on land and underwater. If Kirby touches a Gordo, he loses three vitality bars, which is half of his total health. Gordos can usually not be defeated, although in Mt. Dedede, if Kirby touches a fake Kirby, the Gordos are also defeated along with the other enemies.
In the Extra Mode, there are some noticeable differences with Gordos. Their movements are faster and more erratic, making it harder for Kirby to avoid them. The mode also incorporates Gordo into a few bosses' attacks, including Whispy Woods, who drops them from his leaves, and Lololo and Lalala, who sometimes push Gordos along with their boxes.
Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
In Kirby's Adventure and its remake Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Gordos have a largely similar role as in Kirby's Dream Land, but they do not deal as much damage. Their sprites are almost identical to Kirby's Dream Land aside from some orange coloration on their spikes.
Kirby's Dream Land 3
In Kirby's Dream Land 3, aside from returning as enemies, Gordos are featured in all five of the Super NES MG-5 challenges. One of the challenges features a variety of red, blue, and yellow Gordos. In it, several of these Gordos are briefly called out, and Kirby has to guess how many Gordos of a certain color there are.
There is a Gordo mid-boss named Captain Stitch. Despite being a Gordo and especially a notable member of its species, it is possible for Captain Stitch to take damage from Kirby.
Super Smash Bros. series
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, when King Dedede uses Waddle Dee Toss, there is a rare possibility of him picking up a Gordo and tossing it. Gordos are also featured during King Dedede's Final Smash, Waddle Dee Army, in which they act the same as Waddle Dee Toss, albeit stronger. The game features both a trophy and a sticker of Gordo.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U
Starting with Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, King Dedede's Waddle Dee Toss is replaced by Gordo Throw, in which he always pulls out a Gordo and knocks it with his hammer. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, there is an exclusive trophy of Gordo, and they also appear as enemies in Smash Run.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there is a spirit of a Gordo.
